DIY Dog Treats

A simple, healthy homemade dog biscuit recipe using oats, peanut butter, spinach and banana - a sustainable treat for your best friend, from Dan Pasquali.

Tail-waggy treats
Makes: 20-25 cookies, depending on the size of your cookie cutter.
Ingredients
- 20g coconut oil (about 1 tablespoon)
- 10g fresh parsley
- 40g fresh spinach
- 140g natural peanut butter*
- 2 small eggs
- 1 very ripe banana (about 130g, peeled)
- 350g quick oats
These biscuits are a treat for dogs, so only to be given to the best buddy in your household on special occasions.
Method
1. Preheat a fan-forced oven to 170°C. Line a baking tray with baking paper.
2. Add the coconut oil, parsley, spinach, natural peanut butter, eggs and banana to a food processor. Blend until smooth.
3. Add half of the oats and blend again until combined. Gradually add the remaining oats, blending until you have a soft green dough that is easy to roll. It should not be too sticky or too dry.
4. Place the dough between two sheets of baking paper (to stop dough from sticking). Use a rolling pin to spread out until approximately 8–10mm thick.
5. Use a bone-shaped cookie cutter to cut out the treats, then transfer them to the lined baking tray. (If you don’t have a bone-shaped cookie cutter, roll the dough into a rectangle and cut it into little sticks using a knife). Optional: use cookie embossers to add your puppy’s name for an extra cute touch.
6. Bake for 15–20 minutes, or until lightly golden. Don’t overbake, as they will be too hard for puppies.
7. Allow the treats to cool before storing. Keep in the fridge in an airtight container for up to five days. You can also freeze treats and defrost as needed.
*Use 100 per cent natural smooth or crunchy peanut butter with no added salt, sugar, xylitol or vegetable oils. Xylitol is extremely toxic to dogs.
