Earwigs and woolly aphids

Story by

Here's how to naturally control two pesky pests that have the potential to do permanent damage to your garden.

Earwigs

These pests make holes in leaves and decimate seedlings. Trap them in upside-down pots with scrunched up newspapers inside, then shake pots over a bucket of soapy water daily to release and drown earwigs. Or fill small plastic containers with vegetable oil and drill small holes in lids – earwigs are attracted to the oil and drown.

Woolly aphids

These aphids are annoying pests of apple trees and should be treated now to avoid permanent damage to stems. Dab clumps of woolly aphids with a small artist’s brush dipped in methylated spirits, poured into a small can for ease of carrying. I find this more effective than applying soap or oil sprays. Small birds eat woolly aphids and can also help clean them up.
