Papery everlasting daisies are bright memories of my childhood trips to K’gari (Fraser Island), where their sunny, yellow blooms were magnets for me and my sister. Improved cultivars like ‘Diamond Head’ allow gardeners to enjoy their sunshine at home. One of the most vibrant and reliable of the everlasting daisies, ‘Diamond Head’ does well in pots or in the ground and makes lovely cut flowers, both fresh and dried. Great for coastal and poolside gardens and tolerant of light frosts, plants need well-drained soil and don’t like overwatering. Plants may only last one or two years, but they usually flower from early spring to late autumn, attracting a range of beneficial insects. For dried flowers, pick flowers after the dew has dried, remove leaves and tie into small bunches. Hang upside down in a cool dark, airy spot for 2–3 weeks until dry. Freshly cut flowers can also be put into vases with water.
