Native River Mint
Mentha australis

Height: 30–50cm high x spreading

Sun: Full sun or light shade

Plant: Tubestock

Harvest: 1–4 weeks

Pests/diseases: Powdery mildew in too much shade – move plant or treat with milk spray

Native river mint copes with dry periods, but prefers regular watering, thriving in a self-watering pot or in a rain garden. The best native mint for the kitchen. A perennial herb-like shrub, prune back by half in winter for bushier spring regrowth. Use fresh tips in cocktails or drinks, chopped leaves to make a refreshing tea, which can clear headaches, or to make a minty cordial. Use fresh leaves to garnish desserts and salads or add to a fruity salsa. Grind dried leaves and stems to add to meat marinades or in chocolatey baking. Look for different local forms from local indigenous nurseries.
