Likes: A cool to mild climate.
Dislikes: Hot, direct sun.
When to plant/sow in zone:
How to start: Grow from plant cuttings purchased from specialist native nurseries. Female and male plants are needed for pollination. Plant in sunny location with well-draining soil.
How to grow: Need plenty of moisture. When grown in a cool climate tolerates full sun but in warm, dry areas needs protection from harsh afternoon sun. Growth can be controlled by pruning after harvest; pruning will help create a dense hedge.
When to harvest: After spring flowering, berries appear in autumn, starting out as red but turning black as they ripen. If you can't find a male plant to help with pollination, leaves can be used like bay leaves.
