Babaco

Babacos don’t ask for much but they do need excellent drainage as they are susceptible to root rot in boggy winter soils.

Likes: Dry, shady positions.
Dislikes: Boggy soils.
When to plant/sow in zone:
Requirements: Plant in the understory of another tree to provide shelter from the summer sun and protection from winter frost if growing in colder climates. Can be grown in large pots.
How to start: Start as a small tree in free-draining soil.
How to grow: Babacos don’t need any special treatment – spread some home-made compost over their root zone each year and they will produce happily and prolifically.
When to harvest: Harvest fruit when the skin turns from green to yellow and is soft to touch with a fruity aroma.
