Sustainable September – South Melbourne Market

A month-long festival packed with fun for the kids, learning for adults and ideas to inspire your family to shop and live more sustainably is coming to South Melbourne Market. Sustainable September will showcase the wide array of sustainability practices at the Market and include kids' activities, workshops, tours, a Sustainability Circuit and a special Turning Trash to Treasure exhibition.

Try your hand at fermenting or take a class with Leftover Lovers and learn to use what you've got on hand to make delicious meals. The kids can learn to upcycle using old denim to make bags, or join in sustainable storytime. The Sustainability Circuit will take you on a journey through the Market and show you how to shop more sustainably and discover the Market traders, such as Frankie's Story, who are leading the way by stocking only ethically or environmentally sound fashion labels.

The Turning Trash to Treasure exhibition asks local artists to create a piece of art from market waste, with the final pieces on display in the Market's SO:ME Space from September 20–October 1.

Beyond Plastic Pollution—Pathways to Cleaner Oceans Conference

When valuable resources float out to sea, they not only pollute the human food chain and detrimentally impact wildlife, they represent a shocking waste of resources, and a financial loss to business and industry. The cost of inefficient recycling systems is already a burden, economically, socially and health-wise. It will only grow worse, weighing heavily on business, government and community. Unless we act now.

For the first time, in the Asia-Pacific region, Boomerang Alliance is convening a conference, bringing together the finest thinkers, change makers and innovators to assess the research, the prognosis, and the solutions to marine plastic pollution.

Can your business or community afford to be the last to know about global best practice regulations; how to reduce the plastic footprint of your business or industry; potential new technologies, alternative materials, and plastic-free pathways?

Let’s build a healthier economy, and a better world, by turning waste into opportunity.
